Is your Madison, MS furnace making strange noises? Unless you want a freezing cold house this winter, it’s time to find out what’s wrong with your furnace. Here’s a list of some furnace noises and what each might mean.

1. Popping and Banging

Do you have a gas furnace? If so, a loud pop or bang right after your furnace starts is possibly a delay in the ignition. This can happen when gas builds up before it lights, resulting in a sort of small explosion when it finally does light.

A loud pop or bang might also come from the metal ducts expanding and contracting. But if the problem is an ignition issue, it’s best to have a technician perform HVAC maintenance to check it out. Ignition problems are fire hazards that put you and your home at risk.

2. Screeching and Squealing

If you hear a steady squealing or screeching sound, there’s possibly an issue with the blower motor. This sound can come from a belt that’s bad or a belt that’s slipping. Motor bearings that need oil can make this sound too.

All of these parts keep the blower motor running smoothly. To avoid damage to the motor, check this issue as soon as possible.

3. Clunking and Rattling

A furnace that’s clunking or rattling likely has loose parts. Some possible causes are loose bolts, panels or screws inside the furnace. It might not seem like a big deal, but loose parts can lead to larger problems.

Rattling can also mean there’s a crack in the heat exchanger. This is a serious issue because of the possibility of a carbon monoxide leak. Get an HVAC professional to inspect your system if the noise continues.

4. Buzzing and Humming

Your furnace might make a soft humming or buzzing sound while it’s working. But if either sound is very loud, it could mean there’s an electrical problem. Either of these sounds can occur if electrical components inside have damage or are failing.

Some furnace sounds are harmless, but others can mean there’s a serious problem. Contact Hux Air Conditioning for your furnace and heating repair needs.
