Ordinarily, the heat pump in your Mendenhall, MS home should run quietly. If it makes unusual noises, it’s helpful to know how to identify them. Here are the sources of four common heat pump noises.

1. Bubbling or Gurgling

A bubbling or gurgling sound while your heat pump runs could indicate air in its refrigerant lines. It could mean your heat pump has a refrigerant leak. Fixing the leak and recharging the system should solve the problem.

2. Metallic Impacts

Turn off your heat pump if you hear metal hitting metal. This sound may signal a problem with your heat pump’s fan.

With the unit turned off, see if anything obstructs the fan. If you don’t see a cause for the noise, immediately call an HVAC service technician for help. Operating your heat pump without doing so could severely damage it.

3. Whooshing Sounds

A whooshing heat pump sound will occur primarily in winter. This happens when the heat pump is in defrost mode. In that mode, your heat pump reverses direction to send heat to its outdoor unit.

Running your outdoor unit’s fan won’t cause your heat pump to make a whooshing sound. It’s the heat pump’s defrost operating mode that engages the compressor and blower motor alone. Your heat pump does this to melt ice buildup on its outdoor heat exchanger.

4. Squeals and Screeches

Any squealing or screeching noises from your heat pump could mean you have a blower motor issue. A worn-out drive belt could produce the squeals. Damaged or failing bearings in the motor may emit screeches.
